A small series of oil paintings on prescription bags exploring the abstract articulation of intangible side effects from prescriptions. Dimensions installed are variable. Each piece measures 9”H x 4”W.
This is work from my MFA thesis examining contingency as a metaphorical relationship for medicine. The pieces in this series are designed to be viewed from the front so that the cumulative effect of looking through and at every layer simultaneously is an experience of structures and spaces that appear physical but in fact are not at all. That said, there are structural deformations and physical instrusions that extend through multiple panes. On a practical level, this provides structural support for the work but also contributes to the illusion of physical structure. Just as these pieces are often literally held together with physical elements such as rods or ties, medicine often holds our ideas about one’s body and health together in a type of similar type of contingency. That’s what this series is really about.
Many of the works are designed to be disassembled, much like an anatomy diagram with overlays however they were never intended to be interactive in that way. All works were created between 2005-2006. Most are comprised of oil painting on acrylic or polycarbonate supports with wax and assorted components. Works posted are not for sale.
Mixed Media on polycarbonate, with wooden mount. 2005-2006.
These mixed media paintings are focused on the temporal nature of the mind & body. They are constructed upon transfer images taken from a 1950’s era Anatomy in Surgery reference book. This was a very experimental series of work and was made in connection to my thesis works in 2006. In this work, I was primarily concerned with understanding how the physicality of the support affected the perception of the abstract language of the painting and how color related to time. There is an inherent visceral quality to the work both due to the floppy, fleshy nature of the support and also the transfer contents. All pieces are roughly 11” H x 8 /12”W and not for sale.
These are selections from numerous sketchbooks. Sketchbooks are the fallow ground where new ideas take root.
